Personal experiences:
The look and feel of Linux Red Hat 7.3 is a mixture. I feel
the machine is very stable but extremely slow. Of course the Gnome
desktop makes it so, but still. Windows95 works very smooth on this
also. For obvious reasons, Linux is my choice.
Recommendations:
If you want a fast machine, use Windows 95 OSR2. Works
really fast on this baby, and Siemens has great
driverdisc also.
If you
wan't to Run Linux, then add some patience to the flavour.
Definitely, Linux is my preferred choice, but it's the
posibillities that makes it so. Not performance. And
possibilities on Linux are ......never ending.
You
can avoid the speed limitation but not running X-windows,
or choose to run it without too many services. I only
have the services I think is minimum, but still it ain't
speedy. |
Installation worked like a charm.
I booted on the redhat CD-Rom and configured partition to only run
Linux (my harddrive prevents me from installing dual-anything,
because I have no room).
The graphics adapter works very well, and I can get 1024x768 with 16
colors out of it. that helps a lot on my 12,1" screen. I tested
other configs but I like a high resolution more than a lot of colors.
I also use a 3COM 3C589D for a network card. I had to switch from a
Lasat Flexcard to this because of RedHat not finding the correct
Olicom driver for my Lasat (it's really just an Olicom :). And I'm
not nerdy enough to deal with that issue, yet.
Also the stupid
installation tries to load the network card BEFORE the PCMCIA
controller. But brainy as it is, it tries to load the network driver
again after, so it works.(if it's stupid, but works, it ain't
stupid!)
The only issue during installation was the bad CD's I had burned
?!? I have installed FreeBSD, GNU/Debian, from homeburned CD-Rom's
but only the RedHat made trouble. and at different places every
time......hmmm. Other people have mentioned this problem with the RH
distributions, lately.....I wonder why.
I made a
screenshot with my beloved GIMP, and
here it is..... |
